Wheel2Wheel: Message from New Hope, Cambodia

Hello to the Wheel2Wheel Team,

Just listened to Morgan’s interview with the Naked Lunch.  Amazing interview, you certainly covered a lot of ground in a short space of time.  I thought it was very profound and heartfelt and the message came across loud and clear.  We thought it was an ideal time give you another insight into our plight here in Cambodia.

New Hope has only been operating 3 years, but is growing rapidly in an attempt to alleviate some of the devastating daily lives of these forgotten people of Angkor.  As you know, we are on the very edge of World Heritage land, and educate, medicate and support impoverished families between our Centre and Angkor Wat.  There has been billions of dollars donated in recent years to the conservation of the ancient site of Angkor and their ancient peoples by Govts involved with Unesco, but unfortunately local authorities deem fit to only concentrate on creating a very lucrative tourist site in the future for the Cambodian Govt.

There is no free adult medical treatment available in Siem Reap whatsoever.  From years of severe malnutrition, we have parents at age 40 dropping like flies.  We have many grandparents raising grandchildren, with the middle generation wiped out.  These families work from 4am in the morning until the evening, with selling vegetables they harvest themselves or collecting rubbish, yet cannot provide enough food for the table.  As well as educating 400 children each day, we are now treating up to 100 patients each day in our Health Centre.  These medical atrocities come about by adults not being able to afford the $4 consultation fee at the Govt. Adult Provincial Hospital.

I have attached one of our Family profiles of these forgotten people for your to peruse, and believe me, there are hundreds in this area similar to this.  We start with a full family profile and then discuss steps for family needs and rehabilitation.

We so much look forward to your visit, and would not only like to introduce you to the wonderful smiling faces of resilient children in our classrooms, but to what remains of their family structures, and the shocking living conditions these humble families live under.

We humbly thank you for your support in every way, and hope together we can make a difference to the future of these great people.

Sincerely,

Kerry and Kemsour
