Wheel2Wheel: Our Charitable Difference

A key principle of the initiative was fleshed out today as Jessica Robertson and I talked about the types of charities Wheel2Wheel should shortlist for inclusion and the process for ultimate selection.  As an intermediary between capital and charitable organisations, it is of paramount importance to us that the optimal methodology is adopted for selection.  In a nutshell, we concluded Wheel2Wheel would seek out one charity in each of the 10 countries we ride through between March and June 2011.  The charities would be grass-root style, resource constrained, operated by volunteers, tackling key issues affecting that country, with a track-record of tangible benefits successfully delivered to intended beneficiaries.  The broad areas of focus for us would be children, environment, health, education and human security.  The Wheel2Wheel team will meet face-to-face with the short-listed candidate charities and understand directly how they operate.  During the actual trip each charity will be visited by the team and the television cameras to interview the volunteers, the beneficiaries and showcase the work being done.  The idea being to create greater awareness of the charity’s work and provide what is hopefully a broader and more sustainable conduit of future donations from across the region.  We intend to use the power of the media to foster greater philanthropic consciousness within Asia.
