Wheel2Wheel

Wheel2Wheel: Keep on Training

With a touch over 10 months until departure, my mind continues to focus on getting physically prepared for the journey.  I guess the most daunting thing is not knowing how demanding Wheel2Wheel is going to be.  Of course it is going to be hard, damn hard riding 20,000 kms in 100 days.  Doing anything physical for 100 days is tough.  But how tough is the journey from Hong Kong to Brisbane actually going to be?  Which part of my body is going to break down: my back from countless jolts, my butt from days in the saddle, or my forearms from holding the handlebars through hours of rough riding?  I just don’t know.

All I can do is try to prepare well and be in peak physical condition on 1 March next year.  Thanks to the generous sponsorship of PURE in Hong Kong, we working with a Personal Training to build up a specialised workout program for the final 6 months before departure.  For now though, I’m exercising about 2 hours every day to improve my strength, flexibility and endurance.

Today, I did the “twin peaks” of Hong Kong which is about 4 kms (I think!) of mountainous terrain up and down stairs for something a bit different – it was fun and I suspect this hike will become part of my regular weekly routine over the next 10 months.
