Wheel2Wheel: Powered by D

This has a cool ring to it.  More importantly, its seriously cool to now know the benefits of Vitamin D.  Check out our SPONSORS page and you’ll see that Dr Lauren Bramley has come on board as the “Team Doctor” for Wheel2Wheel – at least during the preparation stage up to departure on 1 March next year.

Today, Simon and I spent an hour with Dr Bramley mapping out our medicial requirements for the trip.  The countries we will visit mean we need a few vaccinations, some of which require 6 months to complete.  Today we received two injections, one for tetnes and diptheria and the other for Hepititus A & B.

We also talked about the importance of getting ourselves “medically fit” in addition to physically fit.  Dr Bramley ran some interesting tests that showed our DHEA and vitamin D levels (both of which are hormones) are too low and will ultimately impinge our endurance capability if left unremedied.  So despite the fact we are training to get into peak condition for departure, we now understand we have to get our internal chemical set-up right as well.

The cornerstone of our treatment over the next two months is 10,000 Iu daily vitamin D intake.  This is hard-core and is designed to quickly address a deficiency in our bodies that adversely impacts almost every facet of one life, from energy levels, muscle development, skin health, cognitive function, cancer, depression to the flu.  Based on Dr Bramley’s account, I’m now wondering why I hadn’t heard about vitamin D earlier in life because it seems to be the miracle supplement.

We will have another check-up and round of tests in July to see how our bodies are responding to the massive hit of vitamin D.  Fingers crossed we will reach the desired range and be feeling like a 20 year old once again!   After 100 days on the road, hopefully I’ll think back to today and be glad we were powered on D.
