Wheel2Wheel

Wheel2Wheel: Houston …… We Have A Problem!!!

It was the perfect day at Mt Buller … grabbed my daughter’s race skis … groomed Little Buller Spur … huge, fast GS turns … just flying … came over the knoll half way down … just arching a pure carve GS turn at mach 3 warp speed … go to set up for my next turn … catch an outside edge … downhill ski grabs and twists under me as my full weight continues to hurtle straight down the hill … then that noise again!!!

SNAP … THERE GOES ACL NUMBER TWO … not to mention two broken ribs!!!

For those of you that have never heard a ligament snap in your knee … let me tell you, it’s one of the worst sounds in the world.  This is the second time I’ve heard it.  Two years ago, powder skiing in Japan I snapped my ACL (Antae Cruciate Ligament ) in my left knee.  On that occasion I had a very successful hamstring ligament replacement that has been incredible … even stronger than my original knee thanks to the very talented Dr Simon Tan at Sports Medicine at St Vincent’s Private in Sydney.

The rupture of my ACL in the right knee happened last Friday and through some fast talking and kicking down a few doors (with my good leg) … I had an MRI on Monday and Dr Tan has agreed to do a replacement operation this coming Friday 20th.  This time however I am getting a new bionic knee courtesy of a synthetic ligament called a LARS.  This advancement in sports medicine is unbelievable.  It’s twice as strong as the original, more importantly it allows me to walk into the hospital and walk out the same day.  These new ligaments are really designed for professional sports people to get them back to competitive sport in only 12 WEEKS.

So my challenge now is to focus all my efforts to getting back on deck for Wheel2Wheel and be running in three weeks, back to full gym work in 8 and after 12 weeks – never knowing I even had a problem with my knee!

Stay tuned … just call me … Simon “Steve Austin” Lock … the bionic man.  Ha!!!
