Wheel2Wheel

Training, Rehab & Dodging Bullets

Well 16 weeks post my ACL Lars replacement operation and today I climbed to the summit on Mt Annpuri on my touring skis and skins. I feel all my training and rehab getting ready for Wheel2Wheel has really paid off on this milestone today. The lifts still aren’t open at Niseko so I believe I might even have been the first person to the peak this season. My rehab and training for W2W over this last section leading into the ride has really been challenging for me. Morgan and I set ourselves the task of being “Bullet Proof” before we leave on our charity ride but the snapping of my ACL was a real set back. Having said that it really made me expand my horizon of what my training reign needed to include. Over the past four months its involved hours and hours in the gym, riding in the Australian Alps, sand running at Bondi, water walking in Thailand, swimming in Sydney, scoter riding in Cambodia, dirty bike riding in Thailand, road riding in Hong Kong,  snow running in Niseko and now skiing and mountaineering.

I didn’t know really till today if my knee was really going to stand up to the test but ski touring on skins in really variable terrain was the ultimate test. While I think my fitness is now the best it’s ever been I still need to get stronger. The BMW 800GS weighs about 250KG and at times I’m really going to need to man handle this mean machine and I’m going to need more brute strength for that…..so back to the gym!
