Wheel2Wheel: Winter Training In Australia

After a fairly hectic few months training with Morgan in Hong Kong in April and May, mainly in the gym and hiking the hills of The Peak, it’s been great over the past few months to continue my training over winter in Australia. Basically wherever I’m located, I’ve been making sure I do five training sessions per week.  Since June this year, I’ve beenon the Sunshine Coast, in Sydney and Melbourne as well as Mt Buller and Perisher.

In my training regime I’ve really tried to take advantage of the local environment, I’ve also decided to get into the ever-so-dangerous pastime of mountain bike riding.   I’m doing this because I believe mountain bike riding will improve my motorbike skills, particularly off-road.

Apart from doing gym work in Sydney and Mt Buller, the training highlights over the past few months have been many and varied … they include sand running in Queensland and Bondi Beach, stand up surfing atNoosa – not as easy as you think and a great work out, 25 km mountain bike rides on the Perisher-Jindabyne Road, 10 km cross country ski touring in Kosciuszko National Park, extensive snow running at Mt Buller, riding 15km up Mt Buller Road, and runs along St Kilda beach.  It’s been amazing to leverage the beautiful outdoors of Australia in order to get “bulletproof” for Wheel2Wheel.

It was also brilliant to have Morgan come to ourProSki Lodge at Mt Buller.  The gym training sessions with him alongside some of Australia’s elite athletes from the Winter Institute for Sports were awesome … a bit tougher was the 10km run out to the quarry on the Corn Hill snow road.

I am happy with how my training is going personally. I feel I’m getting stronger and my stamina is really building. The nutritional supplements (such as Vitamin D and B12) recommended by Lauren Bramley – our team doctor in Hong Kong have also really been helping.
