Wheel2Wheel: Wired for Sound

Today was like the day I got my first iPod all those years ago.

Thanks to our latest little technological gem, the Interphone F4.  Simon and I were jettisoned into the 3rd dimension of motorbike riding: being able to communicate with each other through our helmets!

The simple pleasure of going for a ride with a mate is awesome, but now being able to chat to each other along the way, in crystal clear stereo sound, without taking your hands off the wheel … well, its a whole new world.   Today we discovered this technology would improve our safety – by being able to warn each other about on-coming traffic or obstacles to look out for, would help avoid situations where we become separated, and enable us to verbalize our thoughts as we encounter new scenery or circumstances.

Starting at 7 am on Hong Kong island, we spent seven hours on the bike touring through the New Territories of Hong Kong – we found plenty of remote roads, dirt fields and interesting trails to follow.  The seven hours today represents the longest ride of Simon’s life and the longest ride we have undertaken together.  Not really the perfect preparation for Wheel2Wheel’s 100 day / 20,000 km expedition – – but hey, its a start!

By the end of the day, we were both a little tired physically and mentally.  Clearly we need more training and preparation before 1 March 2011!

Look out for video clips from today’s ride on YouTube – coming soon!
